A: No; however, many students and studios may seek a yoga instructor who has certification.

Q: How do I decide on a Yoga Teacher Training Program?
A: We know that enrolling in a yoga teacher training program is often a carefully considered decision. Here are some questions you might ask to help you decide which program to take.

Is the yoga teacher training (YTT) program Registered with OYA, thereby meeting the comprehensive guidelines set for YTT programs? A list of OYA Registered Schools can be found on the Registered Schools page.

Teacher trainer certification:

  • From a yoga school/program?
  • Registered with OYA? If not, registered with Yoga Alliance?
  • What style did s/he study in and is this the style to be taught in the yoga teacher training program? If not, ask for further qualifications (other training?)
  • Prior teacher training experience –for how long, where and number of students?

Will all of the training be led by the teacher trainer you know or will other people be brought in. If so, what are their qualifications and approaches? Will they relate the material to yoga?

Curriculum: does it cover the areas outlined in the OYA Registration process (see OYA Registered Yoga Teacher School requirements for more information)? Is there an outline of topics to be covered? Does it delve into the lengthy tradition of yoga?

Style of yoga: is it a recognized style i.e. practiced by yoga students beyond the teacher’s students. How long has it been around? Could have an impact on where you teach after training. Is it a style you’ve tried and resonate with?

Length of training: is it a 200 or 500 hour program? If it is less than 200 hours, you are not eligible for OYA Registration as 200 hours is considered a minimum training for teaching yoga.

Time schedule: is it over a one or two year period? Weekends? 1 day per week? Mandatory attendance?

Size of class: will there be individual attention? Is size of room appropriate?

Location: accessible from home and office? Parking available? Safe during evening hours?

Homework: readings, presentations, home practice required? Will you have opportunity to practice teach in the group? How many times? Will there be a practicum in which your teaching will be observed and marked? Will there be exams?

Reasonable Cost? Paid at beginning or at various intervals? Cost of required books?
