General members who are teachers can pursue OYA Registration. It demonstrates to your students and the yoga community your commitment to teaching excellence, safety and continued professional development. OYA Registration is a unique opportunity to deepen both your personal and teaching practice.

NEW OYA REGISTRATION CRITERIA (formerly known as OYA Certification)
(April 12, 2006) OYA Registration or "OYA R" (previously known as OYA C) designates a Registered Yoga Teacher who has completed a comprehensive yoga teacher training (YTT) program covering recognized subject areas of study, the required number of contact and non-contact hours, teaching practice and teaching in the field.

OYA R Requirements:

  • General membership with OYA. Please click here for information. Current annual membership fee for OYA R is $65.00.
  • Yoga teacher training (YTT) certification with at least 200 hours of teacher training for OYA R 200 designation or 500 hours for OYA R 500. If you have not taken a yoga teacher training program and have been teaching for 10 years, please click here for special consideration information.
  • Curriculum which covers 5 key subject areas in yoga studies: yoga techniques, yoga philosophy, ethics and lifestyle, anatomy and physiology, teaching methodology and teaching practice/evaluation. Click here for details.
  • Minimum of 180 contact hours in a 200 hour program and 450 contact hours in 500 hour program. Please click here for information on the number of required contact hours in each subject area.

    *Graduates of OYA Registered schools do not need to submit curriculum and contact hours.*
  • Teacher trainer has OYA R or equivalent, has been teaching for at least 2 years and 1,000 hours for 200 hour program and 4 years and 2,000 for 500 hour program. Please click here for 200 hour program info and here for 500 hour program info.
  • Applicant has been teaching Yoga for at least 100 hours after graduation from a yoga teacher training program. Teaching experience needs to be independent of teaching done while training.
